CHRISTINE SCHWARZER
STAR PRESIDENT
(Heinrich-Heine-University of Duesseldorf)

Christine Schwarzer is the President of STAR (2000-2002). She will present the Presidential Address at the opening of the Conference. Professor Schwarzer accepted the office of President-elect of STAR in 1997 and assumed the responsibilities of President in 2000.  It is her ambition to promote the activities of researchers and students in this important area and to facilitate the dissemination of information and network links among scholars and clinicians. Christine is a full professor in the School of Education at Heinrich-Heine-University of Duesseldorf. In addition to her duties as President of STAR, she is an active researcher in the area of stress and coping, with a particular emphasis in educational areas and the aging, she is Head of the Commission on International Partnerships, a member of the European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction (EARLI) and several German associations. In conjunction with Moshe Zeidner, she co-edited the volume Stress, Anxiety, and Coping in Academic Settings (1996).

CHARLES SPIELBERGER
(University of South Florida)
Charles Spielberger is a University of South Florida distinguished research professor and director of the Center for Research in Behavioral Medicine and Health Psychology. His work on anger and heart failure has put him at forefront of modern psychology. His most recent book,Test Anxiety: Theory Assessment and Treatment, offers new ways to deal with the age-old student problem of exam jitters. He has reported his "stress survey" in papers entitled "Job Stress in University, Corporate and Military Personnel," "Measuring Gender Differences in Occupational Stress" and "Job Stress in Managers, Professionals and Clerical Workers." Terms he has defined include irritation, hostility, aggression and destructive behavior. He has received the APA Award for Distinguished Professional Contributions to Applied Psychology as a Professional Practice. Professor Spielberger earned his B.S. degree in chemistry from the Georgia Institute of Technology and his B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in psychology from the University of Iowa. He, along with Ralf Schwarzer and Henk Van der Ploeg, was the founder of STAR and its first President.

STEVAN HOBFOLL
(Kent State University)
Stevan Hobfoll is Professor of Psychology at Kent State University. Professor Hobfoll is universally known for work in stress and coping, most particularly for his Conservation of Resources Theory (CORE) and his approach to communal coping. He is the Past-President of STAR and co-editor of the Society's journal: Stress, Anxiety and Coping: An International Journal. He is interested in how people are impacted by stressful life circumstances and how these circumstances affect or are affected by physical health. Recent work has examined AIDS prevention among inner-city women, the impact of child abuse on adult functioning, and coping with traumatic life stressors.

DIANNA KENNY
(University of Sydney)
Dianna Kenny is Associate Professor of Psychology at The University of Sydney. She was the Convener and Chair of the International Congress on Stress and Health, held in Manly, Australia in 1996 and principal editor of the book, Stress and Health: Research and Clinical Applications, published in 2000. It contains state of the art contributions from leading international stress researchers, including Hans Eysenck, Charles Spielberger, Richard Bootzin, and Paul Lehrer. She has diverse research interests, has published extensively, and consults widely to government and community groups.
 

MOSHE ZEIDNER
(University of Haifa)

Moshe Zeidner is Professor of Educational Psychology and Dean of Research at the University of Haifa, Israel. He  was the founding Director of the Center for the Interdisciplinary Research on Emotions and Scientific Director of the Laboratory for Cross-Cultural Research in Personality and Individual Differences. His main field of interest is personality and individual differences research, with particular concern for anxiety, stress and coping, and the personality-intelligence interface. He is the author of over 100 scientific papers and chapters and his recent books include: Test anxiety: The State of the Art (1998), Handbook of Self-Regulation (co-edited with Monique Boekaerts and Paul Pintrich- in press), Handbook of Coping (1996, co-edited with Norman S. Endler), and International Handbook of Personality and Intelligence (1995, co-edited with Donald Saklofske).

PAUL MARTIN
(University of New England)

 

Paul Martin is Professor of Psychology at the University of New England. Paul is also the President of the Australian Psychological Society. Much of his research has focused on the factors contributing to headaches and more recently the relationship between headaches and stress. Books that he has authored or co-authored include: Handbook of Behavior Therapy and Psychological Science, Psychological Management of Chronic Headaches, and Health and Medical Research: Contribution of the Social and Behavioural Sciences.


LUCIO SIBILIA, MD
(La Sapienza, Italy)

 

Lucio Sibilia, MD. Senior Researcher, lecturer in Psychiatry, works in the Dept. of Clinical Sciences of the Rome University "La Sapienza"; he works on various topics in behavioural medicine and health psychology, such as psychosocial predictors of chronic diseases and cognitive-behavioural methods of stress management and weight control. Founder and teaching member of the Italian Soc. of Cognitive-Behaviour Therapy, he edited (together with S. Borgo and G. Della Giusta) the first Dictionary of Cognitive-Behaviour Psychotherapy. This Dictionary is currently being translated into English.


JAMES COYNE
(University of Pennsylvania)

 

James C. Coyne is Director of Behavioral Sciences Research at the University of Pennsylvania Comprehensive Cancer Center and Co-Principal Investigator of the NIMH-funded Intervention Research Center. He is also Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, University of Pennsylvania Health System, with a joint appointment in the Department of Family and Community Medicine. His over 160 publications include numerous citation classics and other key papers in clinical health psychology. Prior to coming to the University of Pennsylvania in 1998, he served on the faculty of University of Michigan School of Medicine and University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Coyne was Co-PI on the Berkeley Stress and Coping Project with Richard Lazarus, developing and validating measures of health-related stress, coping, and social support which have served as prototypes for a wide range of instrumentation in the study of stress and coping processes.


ESTHER GREENGLASS
(York University, Canada)
Esther Greenglass is Professor of Psychology at York University and a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and the Canadian Psychological Association. In 1997, Professor Greenglass received the Section on Women and Psychology (SWAP) Award of Distinction from the Canadian Psychological Association.She has published widely in the area of gender roles, work-family issues and stress. Her book, A World of Difference, an examination of psychological aspects of gender roles, has been translated into many languages and has been widely used as a text and reference source.
